Guest guest
The dogged battle being waged by a handful of animal lovers of Kerala to make the bureaucrats, ministers, megalomaniac politicians of various hues and colours and above all the hostile media- (hell bent upon to prove that killing strays is the only way out) accept that ABC should be implemented in the State. We were jeered, scandalised, frowned upon and threatened ;cases were slapped upon activists like Ms.Avis Lyons, the State Animal Husbandry Directorate has issued orders to the vets not to associate with us.Propagandists on the pay roll of the 'dog butchers lobby' (some of them even members of the Kerala State Animal Wefare Board) released press notes saying that ABC is impractical and that a surgery will take 90 minutes. Still we have been fighting;singling out the sane and lone voices among this multitude -pleading with them, making them understand that the only legal, scientific, humane way of managing a healthy pool of strays is only through ABC -to make them take the right policy decisions. The dogged battle is won-but the war is still on. The Kerala Government has directed through an order from the office of the Addl.Chief Secretary dated 9th June 2009 that all panchayats and Municipalitiesshould stop killing of stray dogs and implement the ABC Rules 2003 in letter and spirit. The Kerala Minister for Local Self Government Mr.Paloli Mohammed Kutty has given me a patient hearing for 30 minutes and has agreed to inaugurate the ABC Programme to be implemented in Kumily Panchayat on 19th July. I am enormously relieved and happy and thank all the animal lovers in and outside Kerala who have chipped in with the e-mails,phone calls and letters to make this happen. Thank you all (a copy of the order is attached ) A.G.Babu Member(co-opted)AWBI Mob:09447182735
