Guest guest Posted June 22, 2009 Report Share Posted June 22, 2009 The Times of India, Kolkata Monday, June 22,2009 Assam rhino shot, poachers arrested TIMES NEWS NETWORK Guwahati: Assam lost one more rhino on Saturday after poachers killed a female pachyderm in the Rajiv Gandhi National Park of Sonitpur district, around 200 km from here. The poachers escaped with its horn, officials said. On Sunday, forest officials recovered the bullet-ridden carcass of the rhino, aged around 25, in the Islamukh area near Misamari camp. Park director S Momin said forest officials had heard two gunshots around 6 pm on Saturday. “They launched a search operation immediately, but could not trace the rhino and the poachers. We found the carcass around 7 am on Sunday. The poachers had shot the rhino twice and took away its horn,” he added. Police and forest officials launched a joint operation and held two poachers from Jokholabondha in Nagoan district on Sunday. One of the duo was identified as Harmuj Ali of Sonitpur district.
