Five students who were in Alibaug to bring in the New Year, cut short their trip to save a three-month-old puppy, who was about to be sacrificed by a local woman in a bizarre ritual. The students of S H Jondhale Polytechnic in Dombivli had gone to Alibaug on Monday and had intended to stay there till January 1, 2009. But on Monday night, while they were taking a walk after dinner, they saw a woman drag a puppy near Alibaug ST stand. One of the students, Siddhesh Waghode explained what happened. " The woman, who was in her 40's, was beating the helpless dog with a stick. Then as we watched, she tied the puppy to a nearby tree. Then lifting a sharp object, she tried to slit the puppy's throat. However, we managed to stop her in time, " he said. " But what upset me most were the bystanders who did nothing to stop her, " added an visibly upset Siddhesh. As two of them, Abhijit Rathod and Sanjay Rathod, rushed to a nearby police beat to lodge a complaint, the other three boys, Arvind Upadhyay, Omprakash Pal and Waghode, held on to the woman. The students then contact Nilesh Bhanage, head of Plants and Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) to advice them on the situation. Bhanage said, " I asked them to register a FIR with local police station. The students had meanwhile, managed to take the puppy to a government Veterinary Clinic in Alibaug. The puppy received stitches, but is stable now. " Waghode and his friends were busy registering a complaint against woman till early Tuesday morning. The lady was identified as Hirabai Vishnu Kale, a local villager. She explained she wanted to sacrifice the puppy to gain wealth. She was arrested under section 428 and 429 of the Indian Penal Code (Trying to kill or maim an animal). But determined to stay by the puppy's side, the youngsters took it from the Government Vaternary clinic in Alibaug and for it admitted to Thane on Tuesday night. Waghode said, " We have no regret about not celebrating New Year. We will celebrate with the puppy when it recovers. "
