MONSOON TREE PLANTATION & PLASTIC WASTE COLLECTION DRIVE: On 15th of May 2008, 12 Volunteers from PAWS, 40 Volunteers from Hariyali & 80 Students from Kalsekar College, Mumbra joined the Mass Tree Plantation organized by 'Hariyali Trust', Thane. A total target of 25,000 trees was planted at the site during the current monsoon by Hariyali Trust with other like-minded NGO's, Community Groups, and Schools & Colleges. During the session we found a small snake which was released near a water pond & we also found a small mix black Labrador pup which actually had a belt on its neck. HORSE/PONY HEALTH CHECK-UP CAMP - KALYAN On 8th June, PAWS Team organized the Pony / Horse vaccination & health check-up camp in Kalyan city. The horses / ponies that are employed on 'Tonga' (Horse driven cart) were checked for good health and also vaccinated against 'Serra' disease. Tetanus vaccinations were given on Sunday evening. PAWS team visited the 2 places in kalyan at Chakki Naka area wherein most horse owners live. Dr. Datta Raje along with other LSS vaccinated the horses. Volunteers Kunal Chheda gave first aid to the ponies & Crystal filled the cart owners' data and treatment records. Anushree & Aashim helped the vet in preparing vaccinations. New volunteers Avinash Bhagat from Thane & Shahank Pillai from Kalyan also experienced PAWS event. Sangam Khandare & Prathmesh Desai assisted vets in camp. Crystal & Prasad spoke to the 'Horse Cart Owners Association' & vets a week in advance to organize this event. Ponies & Horses that are vaccinated are given a jaggery treat. We were also supposed to announce the 'Best maintained pony' & 'Best maintained horse', but heavy rains did not permit us. Over 25 ponies were checked and treated as well as vaccinated. Every year PAWS organizes such drives in Kalyan where Horse carts still exist. We teach the horse-owners that they are not the masters but partners of their horses. If the pony doesn't work then the owner cannot run his business. So they should treat the animals as partners & give them more humane treatment. Below is the link of few photos of the camp uploaded in Orkut network: http://www.orkut.com/Album.aspx?uid=11637720281533423481 & aid=1212979437 This is the 5th year when PAWS has organized camp for working horses. ````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````\ ``````````` 8.
