Sub; Activities of " Animal Lover's Club " of Thodupuzha Govt. Vocational

H.S.S. in Idukki District..

 

Ref: Media reports on the activities of the Club.

 

It is reported in various media that an " Animal Lover's Club " promoted by

some teachers and officials from Animal Husbandry Department is functioning

in the school.The main activity of the Club is Poultry farming especially

Turkey hens and cocks procured from Kureepuzha in Kollam district.The

students are made to render " animal love " to these birds till they gain

enough weight to be sold to the V.I.P.families or the elite cold storages of

the city.(turkey meat is a delicacy and is costly)

 

One's food habits are absolutely subjective and we never expect a radical

change overnight.There may be difference of opinion in employing innocent

children to fatten the turkeys for slaughter.The Club promoters can argue

that it forms part of their curriculum.

 

But why promote this cruelty under the name " Animal Lover's club " ? " Animal

love " is a word with a noble meaning ,easily understood even by the

illiterate -practiced and cherished as a belief and way of life to millions

around the globe.

 

The Education Ministry under you has been unnecessarily targetted and

vilified from different corners -in most cases on policy matters.But it

seems, a group with vested monetary interest is misusing the facilities

offered to the higher secondary students, in this case.

 

As a small minority in the midst of the overwhelming " meat

farming-eating " community of our state we are quite aware of the crafty

methods being employed by the animal farming and husbandry lobbies.

We are quite aware how officials from the State Animal Husbandry wing

surreptitiously cultivate and promote animal farming activities in the guise

of animal welfare.

 

As Minister for Education and a proponent of fine arts and a man of letters

,I believe ,you have to ensure that the real meaning of 'Animal Love'' is

not high jacked by a group of meat sellers using our school campuses as

their wallowing ground.

I request you not to allow poultry farming and meat selling in the school

using innocent children under the guise of " Animal Lover's Club " to satisfy

the greed of a handful of animal husbandry officials.
