Stray dog bite victim dies; locals create ruckus

TNN 31 July 2009, 03:18am IST

LUCKNOW: A day after an ox killed an old man in Lalbagh, a 20-year-old died

reportedly after being bitten by a stray dog in Aminabad on Thursday. Angered

by the incident scores of residents jammed the main road resulting in chaos

for hours. It was only after police intervened that the situation was

brought under control.

Reports said that Javed, a resident of Kasaibada, was bitten by a stray dog

about 15 days back. Residents claimed that the boy developed complications

and subsequently, died on Thursday.

Locals alleged that they have been repeatedly lodging complaints with the

Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) which, however, turned a deaf ear.

The incident has once again brought to fore the slack attitude of municipal

authorities in dealing with the menace of stray animals. Just a day back, a

70-year-old resident of Lalbagh was attacked by an ox. The old man later

succumbed to his injuries in trauma centre.

Even as the menace largely goes unaddressed, the LMC is yet to recruit

enough dog-catchers, besides arranging for adequate space to keep the

captured animals. In fact, the LMC has only one dog-catcher as on date.

Moreover, LMC's dream project, Kanha Upvan too remains a non-starter for the

want of adequate attention. Municipal officials said that they are left with

no option but to leave the stray animals outside the city limits. " But

that's hardly an answer as most of them return into the city limits after a

while posing danger to commuters,'' an official in the veterinary department

said.
