1. FROM THE DESK OF HONY. GEN SECRETARY:

Volunteers form the backbone of an organization; they promote the cause of

the organization. Some individuals become member / volunteers because of

their individual love for animals, they do care for strays / pet animals and

they become volunteers to get timely help for them. Nothing wrong in that

but when such volunteers / members do not get organizational service in time

for various reasons, they simply say the organization / NGO is corrupt. They

feel that NGOs pay lip-service to the cause of animal welfare.

Recently I came across a post in wherein a girl had spotted

black bull on the streets of delhi & informed an NGO. The NGO responded that

they can not help the bullock due to various limitations. The girl openly

circulated an e-mail saying that the NGO is not functioning properly. I

posted a reply to her asking her as to what has she done to help that

animal. Till date, have not received any reply from her. I believe that this

girl must be searching another NGO to target. The girl probably thinks that

her responsibility ends by pointing fingers at the NGO. Similar instances

have happened with many NGOs in the past. I would like to make everyone

understand that all NGO's have limitations, Please take into account and

understand their style of functioning, services, geographical area covered;

understanding the people involved in cause should be accounted for before

making any comments. Those people, who do not have these understanding,

should seek other options.

We at PAWS have decided to train each individual in all aspects of the

organizational functioning wherein they should not depend on an NGO for

their work unless and until organization has its own full fledged hospital.

3. SOME NOTABLE FIELD CALLS:

## On the evening of 6th January, PAWS office received a call from a train

traveller that a dog had been run over by a train & his hind leg was cut.

PAWS team swung into action. Volunteer Bhavesh along with driver Prabhu

rescued the dog and admitted it to Thane SPCA late in the evening. The dog

died later due to excessive bleeding.

## PAWS founder Anuradha received call from Kalwa that a stray cow was in

her litter process. Midway through the process the calf was born but her

uterus had come out. With the help of local citizens, Anuradha shifted the

cow & the new born calf to SPCA on 11th January. The cow was operated upon &

will soon be shifted to a cow shelter.

## PAWS volunteer Saurabh Chougule spotted a person selling small coloured

chicks in Dombivli. Along with volunteers Rupesh Nair & Sanmit Raje he went

to rescue them. However, by that time, all chicks were sold out & only one

pink coloured chick was rescued which was sent to hospital on 16th January.

Another seller was spotted by volunteer Kartick on 30th January. He

immediately called Saurabh & rescued 196 small chicks cramped in cages.

5. AWARENESS PROGRAMS – RALLY & KITE FLYING

# On 17th January, PAWS volunteers Parinita Joshi & Sonali Bagde organized

an awareness program in Holy Angel's School in Dombivli. Little kids enjoyed

the 'Compassionate Citizen' video.

# For Republic Day – 26th January, PAWS office received a letter from

'Jan-Gan-Man CBSE School' that they are organizing a rally to create

awareness on Environmental issues. They were also planning to use an

elephant safari during the rally. Upon receiving the letter, Mansi & Sonali

immediately went to meet the school principal & urged him to withdraw the

elephant exhibition. Finally the school agreed to withdraw the elephant

ride. Then PAWS team made banners, placards, hired animal mascots & 15

volunteers participated in Republic Day Rally. The team was headed by

Saurabh & Sonali. Volunteers Kartick Thevar, Kajal Mane, Prathmesh Desai,

Darshak Shah, Parinita & Ashni Joshi, Sanmit Raje, Neetu John, Preeti

# Makar Sankranti – a festival celebrated in India, by flying kites. But

kite flying is dangerous to birds and humans alike. The thread which is used

for flying kite is coated with glass powder. It can hurt flying birds.

Before this day PAWS volunteers Mansi, Sonali, Darshak & Bhavesh put-up

posters all over the city. We whole heartedly thank Advertising Company for

their sponsorship of 150 posters across the city & also for designing unique

styles.
