Dear All,

Here is info I have been sent about the case in eastern India that Mr

Siddiqui has posted. The final hearing is on August 5. Please send

emails and call if possible. Do not email Sushil Modi, the address is

not functional.

A widow in her seventies, Rajkumari Devi, lives in the Tatma Toli

area of Purnea district, Bihar, eastern India. She is alone except

for her seven-year-old dog, Chhotu, who is her only source of

companionship, love and protection from danger. She owns a piece of

land, less than a third of an acre, whose worth is Rs 9,00,000. The

area's goons, and all the people in the community around her, have

been eyeing her land. She has been subjected to break-ins and

burglaries in her house in Bhatta Bazar. Each time, Chhotu has chased

away the intruders and defended her, saving her life.

Seeing that the dog is standing in their way, these people went to

the authorities and reported that he is a " mad dog " . They also tried

to kill him through mob beatings, poisoning and FIRs. This time, the

matter went to court and the court awarded him capital punishment.

The poor widow got a lawyer to plead for her. Last Thursday, the

court heard that the dog herds his owner's five goats to the grazing

ground in the morning and brings them back in the evening every day.

The court was impressed and, after observing the dog, said he

appeared to be normal and not mad.

However, the final hearing is on August 5, 2008. We are trying to
