Guest guest
While channel surfing I happened to watch this new TV series , ‘Is Jungle se mujhe bachao’(Save me frm this jungle), another T.V. reality show set amidst some Jungle in Malaysia, and entails the participants to perform certain tasks (involving snakes and other animals), such as, lying in a locked iron coffin containing slush with pythons and other snakes crawling all over for 10 mins. Certainly shocking! The link to view that episode is posted below. Even though m no herpetologist to know the extent or intensity of poison of the snakes being used in the show. But if u watch the clipping u can hear at one point the female host telling the performer that u have some snakes like the ‘Rat Snake’ & ‘Mangrove Snake’ for company. Now as far as I know, Rat snakes are quiet unpredictable and aggressive. Long time back they were considered to be non-poisonous but recent researches prove otherwise. And Mangrove snakes or Cat Snakes (so referred to because of their elliptical pupils) are poisonous albeit weakly. Even though I won’t be able to comment on the behavior and attitude of the snakes towards a human being specially that of a python, would I be wrong to say that it could so have happened that the fangs of the Rat Snakes and Mangrove snakes were extracted? And the python sedated? It is plausible is it not? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4-vhBu31Mvs & feature=related But I am wont to believe that such reality shows, where snakes and other animals are subject to being part of such shows for the sake of entertainment and increase the TRPs! Whether India or abroad Mr. Danish Khan, laws to prevent cruelty to animals or man-handling them or making them ‘objects’ for the sake of entertainment are the same!!! This is illegal and against animals ethics what is being aired on Indian television! And how could the Malaysian govt allow this? If this is the way they think they are promoting tourism then is it not against their National Ecotourism Plan 1995? And what are they trying to promote by way of showing such shocking tasks being performed at the cost of the poor creatures’ freedom? Is all of it not against the following Federal Laws and policies of Malaysia? 1. The Wildlife Protection Act of 1972 (which was enacted after the 1955 wildlife ordinance was repealed) 2. The Wildlife conservation Enactment 1997 (a law for the regulation, protection, conservation & management of wildlife, caves and wildlife areas) 3. The Wildlife Protection Ordinance 1998 (an ordinance that provides for better provision for the protection of wildlife, the establishment and management of wildlife Sanctuaries and all matters ancillary thereto. 4. The National Forest Act 1984 [act 313] (provides for the administration, management & conservation of forests & forestry development within the states of Malaysia) Is it not? This has been going on for sometime now and something needs to be done. There's a law in place but some people are taking advantage of the loop holes. We need to act quickly and firmly. It's disgusting to see that programmes that use animals as objects to shock viewers are aired, " Maneka told*DNA*. The immediate provocation for the move seems to be the new reality show Iss Jungle Se Mujhe Bachao which shows ten celebrities roughing it out in the jungles of Malaysia. Danish Khan, marketing head of Sony Entertainment Television points out, " The law says we (channels) can't shoot in India with animals and we aren't doing that. If any new law is implemented, we will have no problems in abiding by it. " But already, People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has protested against the channels using a legal loophole to beam programmes that involve animals by shooting them outside India. Says NG Jayasimha, campaign manager of PETA, " What is happening on Indian television in the name of reality is absolutely illegal and against the spirit of the existing law. On one hand we have a law that protects animals and on the other there's a loophole. It defeats the purpose of protecting animals. More and more shows are taking advantage of this. We need to have an independent auditor for shows that are being shot abroad with animals and that person should ensure that the show is following animal welfare norms. " If matters do escalate, it won't be the participants saying " I*ss jungle se mujhe bachao* " , but instead the channels crying " Maneka Gandhi *se mujhe bachao*! " *Animal instinct! Khatron Ke Khiladi:* (Shot in Bangkok) Host Akshay Kumar was filmed leading two leopards on a leash and then with a snake around his neck. *Roadies: *(Shot in Australia) Contestants ate insects and reptiles and also shot with alligators. # Both shows are slated to start another season soon... -- http://www.stopelep hantpolo. com http://www.freewebs .com/azamsiddiqu i
