Karunanidhi * — CONTEST: Bullock cart race held in Tuticorin on Sunday. * Tuticorin: For a difference, smoke and dust trails churning up behind speeding cars and buses along the normally busy Tuticorin-Ettayapuram highway gave way to a bullock cart race here on Sunday. The race was organised by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam men in connection with the 85th birthday celebrations of their leader, Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi. In all, 20 carts took part in the 'big cart' segment and 23 in the 'medium cart' category. While the 'big carts' covered a distance of 15 km, the counterparts covered 12 km. In a close finish, the cart sponsored by Vijayakumar, and driven by P. Selvaraj (Sinthalakattai) and Mookaiah (Milaganatham), bagged the top honours in the 'big cart' section. The cart sponsored by S.V.S.P. Chandraraja, and driven by Kamatchi and Dharmendran, walked away with the first prize in the other segment. The cash prizes awarded to the winners had a tinge of novelty. The carts which came first to third in the 'big cart' category received Rs.1,00,085, Rs.90,085 and Rs.80,085, respectively. Party sources told *The Hindu* that the last two digits denoted the age of Chief Minister. The last two digits of cash prizes of Rs.56,056, Rs.46,056 and Rs.36,036 given away to first three finishers in the 'medium cart' section, denoted the age of M.K. Stalin. District secretary N.
