Guest guest
South China Morning Post Apr 30, 2009 http://www.scmp.com/portal/site/SCMP/menuitem.2af62ecb329d3d7733492d9253a0a0a0/?\ vgnextoid=c9e92e498e2f0210VgnVCM100000360a0a0aRCRD & ss=Letters+to+the+Editor & s=Op\ inion | The Chime-Long Group must really be out of touch with public sentiment if it thinks that opening a marine theme park [in Zhuhai] is a sound business proposition. Attendance is plummeting at theme parks worldwide; some are facing bankruptcy. It is difficult to understand how any development company can be unaware of the growing condemnation of keeping animals in captivity for entertainment. Marine animals inhabit vast, fascinating and complex worlds. Many species establish close co-operative and long-standing relationships. In aquariums these multifaceted social bonds are left in tatters. Animals are not viewed as unique individuals by this for-profit industry. They are interchangeable and replaceable. Instead of swimming and living in fathoms of water, fish and other sea life are relegated to shallow tanks measured in litres. Can a true understanding and appreciation of aquatic creatures come from looking at bored, frustrated animals living in artificial environments? The answer is no. This company should reverse course before countless animals' lives - and yuan - are lost. Rochelle Regodon, campaigns manager, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals Asia.
