There are many good recipes out there, and many bakers who quite routinely bake them. There is no telling at this remove in time & space just what the baker of this fiasco did wrong, but I suspect it was a case of a baker making a mistake that would have been a mistake no matter what kind of cake was being made. -- Merritt Clifton Editor, ANIMAL PEOPLE P.O. Guest guest
**** You don't need to look an odd one out to be a vegan. **** In fact one doesn't even need to have a visibly 'vegan party' to show that you care for animals. Let people enjoy the meal and then know what veganism is. During my daughter's party last year we had everything that would please a typical Indian palette, rather it looked as if it was a dairy overload.... I had everything a party would have... a. Paneer Tikka b. Cake c. Paneer curry d. 'Milk' based Drinks (smoothies) e. Fruit custard f. Curd Rice And yet it was vegan and it became one of the most talked of party in the town. 1. For starters we had ' paneer /cottage cheese tikka' (actually it was tofu tikka) a favorite for vegetarians with some vegetable kebab. 2. Also some lovely smoothies that used soy milk instead of little milk that is put for smoothness. 2. We had a wonderful cake, 30 lbss of cake vanished without a trace, I barely got a taste of it. (to my surprise I found that most bakers have turned vegan bakers out of business reasons, vegetable based cream and egg substitutes which are cheaper are anyways used, a little tweak to not to add skimmed milk and the cake was vegan) 3. For curries, we had some lovable tawa curries that had generous helpings of 'cottage cheese' (actually tofu) 4. Then we had curd rice made from groundnut based milk turned into curd with some Indian spices to cover groundnut taste. 5. For dessert we used almond milk to make a lovely fruit-custard. It was at the end of the dinner, that it was announced that this is a vegan party and everything was vegan, made with vegan substitutez. Many found it hard to accept the truth. As a foodie, I find it is not so hard to get vegan food which is just like the commonly eaten stuff. I have promised the local Peta office a treat, who had missed my daugther's birthday bash. Most of them haven't tasted such stuff for years and looking forward to eat the 'cheese chilly toasts' and 'butter milk' I enjoy regularly. Local soymilk brands have now got rid of the aftertaste and make everything a typical household does, it make excellent curds, buttermilk and other common dairy dishes. Manish Jain (indinavegan.com) who is not just a vegan but also makes just about every kind of 'dairy' dishes without milk. He was the main 'architect' of my daugther's party for which he came all the way from Indore. Nandita Shah from Sharan runs lovely vegan education classes and travels across the globe educating health concious people on plant based diet, and people die for the recipes she suggests. So veganism can only enhance a party not ruin it. Bad preparation can ruin any party, similarly mistakes can ruin any party vegan or nonveg. manoj aapn , Merritt Clifton <anmlpepl wrote: > > >I was visiting my 110% pure vegan friend during her daughter's 7th > >birthday party...The cake contained no refined sugars or sweetener > >harvested via the slave labour of bees.
