Guest guest
Animal Welfare Team Offering Help To Owned and Stray Animals in Sichuan SPCA (HK) and animal welfare organisations form concern group http://www.spca.org.hk/upload/Sichuan_Web_posting-eng.pdf The earthquake that took away tens of thousands of lives on 12 May 2008 has left many survivors homeless and helpless. At the same time, vulnerable companion animals and livestock are also in need of help. In some areas, where there is a dependence on such animals, their health and welfare are important for the re-building and recovery process. The SPCA (HK) was in contact with local animal shelters and animal welfare organisations located in Chengdu and Zhongqing areas the day following the earthquake. These shelters suffered slight damage, and with their own situation stabilised, their volunteers are now actively seeking out those animals which are homeless and in need, but resources are scarce. We are presently in the Chengdu area to evaluate the situation and provide advice on animal aid distribution and care. The latest update from our team in Chengdu informs that: May 23 Good news from Sichuan. Team submitted proposal offering assistance in disease control to local government. Initial feedback is a positive one. Local vet is arranging to return to Dujiangyan to help vaccinate all dogs with approval given by the Mayer of Sichuan Province. The team rescued 14 dogs & 2 kittens today. Another team comprising local animal welfare organisation is on their way to Chinchuen to access the latest situation there. May 22 Volunteers and local welfare groups are helping to transport owned and stray animals which are probably left behind by their previous owners to a temporary shelter. Notices on dog cull have been posted and the group is seeking for more communications with the government bodies on alternative, humane measures. May 21 SPCA personnel in Chengdu, China are working with local contacts and is traveling out in various locations gathering as much information as possible. Other groups at SPCA are preparing to support once the needs are fully known. The SPCA (HK) continues to closely monitor the situation and will do our utmost to cooperate and if necessary assist registered charities, local authorities, animal welfare organisations and volunteers to relieve all unnecessary suffering to humans and animals. Activities in China is supported from our SPCA China Fund.
