Warm Regards Radhika Singh http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Cities/Lucknow/Visitors-to-zoo-continue-with-\ insensitive-behaviour/articleshow/4664397.cms Visitors to zoo continue with insensitive behaviour 17 Jun 2009, 0421 hrs IST, TNN LUCKNOW: The past few days have been busier for the lion king at city zoo. `Prince' has elicited inquiries from higher officials of forest department. His leisurely pose with plastic bottles stuffed in his mouth has put all in the department's hierarchy on their toes. Chief wildlife warden, B K Patnaik himself conducted an inspection of zoo premises after Prince peeped out of pictures with plastic bottles and tin cans strewn around in his enclosure. " We are set to come up with strict checks on all this within a day or two, " assured Dr Utkarsh Shukla, deputy director, city zoo. It is well that the matter has been taken note of. But, all the focus on the problem has been insufficient to make a mark on people's sensitivities. On Tuesday, bottles were again found lying inside his enclosure missing him by a few inches. The visitors shouted at the top of their voices and in a bid to make themselves visible to the lion, many of them climbed the branches of the Banyan right in front of the enclosure waving hands and whistling to attract his attention. Thankfully, zoo staff does not forget to trim the branches that almost overhang inside the enclosure lest one of them would land right inside. " We know people climb up on them and get themselves clicked with the lion in the background, " shared a staff. On the monitoring side, there are zoo people on duty this time. But the sight of them is not enough to bridle the unruly crowd. However, the coming up measures might see changes like telling people at every step to throw bottles and cans only into dustbins. For this dustbins will have to be bought, as at present zoo might be having very few of them. Secondly, the height of grill at few enclosures like that of lion might be increased. Though it may obliterate the view slightly but it will be safer. The stricter measures for zoo visitors are mostly toned down due to the fact that people come to the place to enjoy. Anything strict might turn them away. But while all this will take a little time, on Tuesday, zoo staff was well at cleaning job at reptiles' enclosures. The coming up plan might also take the form of collective disposal of all forms of plastics and cans. This may let the visitors free from the responsibility of disposing off the bottles. There is also a section of staff ruing that it is difficult manning the visitors coming to the zoo. With close to 30 keepers against about 130 animal enclosures it is not the ideal condition.
