Guest guest
http://www.hindu.com/2009/01/05/stories/2009010557270200.htm *A silent call to ban 'jallikattu'* Staff Reporter CHENNAI: Holding placards with slogans condemning cruelty to animals, dozens of volunteers took out a rally in perfect silence on the sands of the Marina here on Sunday. The volunteers flashed slogans such as 'Violence of animals is against the law' and 'Attacking animals is brutality,' to drive home the message on prevention of cruelty to animals. Members from over 15 animal welfare organisations, including the Blue Cross, India Project for Animals and Nature and other like-minded societies across the State took part in the 'Silent ahimsa procession demanding a ban on jallikattu.' It was flagged off from near the Gandhi Statue and concluded near Tiruvalluvar Statue. " This has been the first time a string of animal welfare organisations across the State have got together for the cause, " said J. Pragadeeswaran, coordinator of the rally. Expressing concern over the interim order passed by the Supreme Court to revoke the ban, he said a permanent ban should be in place to prevent cruelty to animals. The set of guidelines that State government laid out during its appeal to revoke the order and permit the sport were flouted at all places. " Animal Welfare Board was not being informed about the event in most cases. 'Jallikattu' violates the Prevention of Cruelty of Animals Act and also puts the safety of public at stake. A complete ban is the solution, " he suggests. -- http://www.stopelephantpolo.com http://www.freewebs.com/azamsiddiqui
