Guest guest
Hi, I was in Nagpur last week. There are four tigers in Nagpur Zoo. An adult and three rescued cubs. I did observe keepers entering the tiger cage, an act that I found disturbing.( I have seen this act at Vishakhapatnam Zoo too and wrote about it in the Zoo Inquiry.) I am expecting my concerns to be addressed very soon on multiple fronts, all of which may not be visible and public. Also, the three tiger cubs at Nagpur Zoo were apparently rescued from the wild in Chandrapur because they were allegedly abandoned by their parents. This act is also open to question since in the current crisis situation of wild tigers in India, bringing in three wild animals and incarcerating them for life may not be in the best interests of the wild population of Indian tigers or the captured individuals. It is good this matter has become public and I hope this will focus attention on the wild origin of the cubs too and their future, for these animals could be potential candidates for release. There are additional issues too concerning Sloth Bears in captivity in Nagpur Zoo. There has been a report that Nagpur Zoo has also been earmarked for a facelift by an NRI and I would certainly agree with this initiative for the zoo needs improvement. Currently, a couple of my colleagues are working with me on the zoo issue in personal capacities and are in the process of preparing a draft of recommendations for the Central Zoo Authority. I will ask them to add Nagpur Zoo and Raipur Zoo to their list. I hope to post more on this shortly for this is an ongoing process. Condition in Chatt Bir Zoo in Punjab is also not so good.about aweek ago akid went to Zoo with his pet Rabbit to handover it to Zoo authorities.A person Took the Rabbit inside and put that into a cage of Python. The Python Killed and devoured the poor creature in front of its friend(The Kid). The matter reported in media and adaily wager removed.Actually the people working in Zoo donot have any interest or any special training. In 2007 Wildlife week Zoo director organised asnake show with pythons and snakes taken inside Zoo without any permission from CZA.neither the rescuing Society(?) has any recognition from CZA for keeping reptiles with Them.Transportation of wildlife was also done without any permission by CWW.However the CWW Punjab and Zoo and Conservator Zoo and Parks were party to such event.Later they held Python and snake shows in various parts of state.Means protector turned violators. God knows when these people will start working properly.
