Guest guest
Forwarded by AAPN Moderator: Dear Friends, In working on this anti-fur campaign this past year, I constantly come across online sellers of dog fur and dog meat. One of the biggest online markets for dog meat and fur is the online marketplace Alibaba.com. Alibaba is 40% owned by . The vast majority of Chinese people abhor dog meat and dog fur. But given the size of China's population, even a tiny percentage can drive a tremendous demand. Here are links to paying Alibaba users who offer tremendous quantities of dog meat for sale. http://detail.china.alibaba.com/buyer/offerdetail/470532644.html http://detail.china.alibaba.com/buyer/offerdetail/181780822.html http://detail.china.alibaba.com/buyer/offerdetail/405013703.html http://detail.china.alibaba.com/buyer/offerdetail/466636935.html I'm wondering if this could be the basis for an international campaign against Alibaba, which does have a huge international marketplace and seeks to become the world's largest b2b marketplace. (It might already be so.) In addition to offices in China, Alibaba has corporate offices in Silicon Valley and London. http://news.alibaba.com/specials/aboutalibaba/contact.html I'm curious to know if any of you think a successful campaign could be organized around this issue. Thanks for any feedback you have. Just last night, I was working with a Beijing animal rescue group. We'd brought several abandoned dogs with distemper to a veterinary hospital. The rescuers I was working with have rescued animals from Beijing's notorious Tongzhou dog markets, and they informed me that every single breed of dog sold as " pets " were also feeding the dog meat and dog fur business. (Once the dogs get too old, they are sold off for meat and/or fur. That includes expensive breeds such as mastiffs and huskies and old english sheepdogs.) The volunteers were surprised to learn that American corporations like Google and were profiting directly from this trade, and asked that we Americans please do something about it. More than 20 Suzhou animal rescuers went there, and they chose to call >the Suzhou Police for everyone's safety. > >The Suzhou Police Officers carried out the law and showed their humility, they >had all the cats released right away. They immediately stopped this cat stealing. > >Most of the cats were house pets and were not afraid of the people. > >There were 2 female cats that gave birth to kittens, a lot of cats found it hard >to breathe, and it was clear that the cat-nappers caged the poor cats for a long >time already. Some owners found their lost cats from the cage already. 5 cages >of cats got released and 2 of the cages were kept in cat lover's home for adoption. > >I wonder how long the chain of the cat-napping can go on for before it is >stopped. This is an unforgivable crime, why does the Government not do anything >about it? Sunday, August 16, 2009 1:38 AM wish you a nice trip Thanks for your reply Rosa, I am proud of these good people in Shanghai, Jiaxing and Suzhou cities. Also I am really worry about them. The lack of animals law, the ignorance of the public and the indifference of the government, make it very very difficult for us animals lovers. These brave people are sacrificing their time, comfort and even risking their lives to stop the cruelty! Please if you can also publish it so as to let more people know what is happening here in China. I understand many people outside China do not know the facts. They even misunderstand that eating cats is our culture. It is not the case. It is nothing to do with culture, race, or anything but it is about humanity. Although cruelty on animals is everywhere around the world, but not as so common as in China. And cruelty in the western world should not be an excuse for China to allow this unbearable cruelty on cats and dogs. Please if you can pass our message to the western people and let them know that this is from a Chinese animal lover.
