Clinic assistant Veni Ramiah, 52, forgot everything else when she saw the little dog struggling to stay afloat in the mad rush of water in the monsoon drain along Jalan Dato Abdul Aziz, Petaling Jaya yesterday. “I spotted the puppy at about 5pm and I just couldn’t leave that poor thing there,” said Veni, a self-confessed dog-lover who has had two dogs. She called the emergency numbers for help and three Civil Defence Department personnel who arrived tried to lure the puppy back to the drain’s side. Seeing their efforts were unsuccessful, a worker from a stationery shop opposite the road jumped into the water and waded to the dog. “It bit me when I grabbed it and dragged it back to the side,” said A. Anbalagan, 30. The puppy struggled to free itself, but before it fell back into the water, one of the civil defence staff, M. Sri Shunmuganathan, grabbed it by the neck. Holding the shivering puppy later yesterday, Veni said she was bringing it to a vet and planned to keep it at home. “I was supposed to have conducted a tuition class at 8pm, but I’m glad to have saved a precious life instead,” she said.
