Sanjay Sarkar, 24, was found crouching near the deer enclosure around 4.10am and caught while trying to jump over the fence. Guards at the animal rescue centre, a two-hectare campus located near a Calcutta Armed Police camp, saw four others standing outside the fence but could not catch them. Sanjay was carrying a chopper and a wire-cutter. The guards had at first mistaken the intruder for a monkey. “One of our colleagues felt something move in the darkness and alerted us. A closer inspection revealed that it was a man. He was wearing only a pair of shorts and had camouflaged himself by smearing his body with mud,” a guard said. On realising that he had been spotted, Sanjay grabbed the branch of a tree and tried to jump across the fence. “He also whistled to alert his accomplices, who immediately ran,” the guard said. The four men waiting on the other side of the fence crossed the Kestopur canal and fled before the guards, all former army personnel, could catch up with them. The forest department produced Sanjay in the court of the additional chief judicial magistrate in Salt Lake, which remanded him in judicial custody till September 2. He has been sent to Dum Dum jail. Soumitra Dasgupta, the conservator of forests, said Sanjay had not only confessed to killing the seven-year-old doe that went missing in June but also playing a role in the theft of eight rare monkeys from Alipore zoo earlier this month. But the police said there was no evidence yet of the youth, who is from Shantipur in Nadia but lives near Kestopur, having anything to do with the zoo episode. “We have interrogated him and our preliminary investigation suggests no link with the theft of eight Common Marmosets,” said Jawed Shamim, the deputy commissioner of the detective department. Sanjay has been booked under the Wildlife Protection Act. If convicted, his punishment will be a maximum of seven years in jail along with a fine of Rs 20,000, or both. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/news/city/kolkata-/Youth-nabbed-for-sneaking-\ into-deer-park/articleshow/4908610.cms Youth nabbed for sneaking into deer park TNN 19 August 2009, 05:24am IST KOLKATA: A 24-year old youth suspected to be involved in a deer poaching casewas arrested after sneaking into Salt Lake's Deer Park in the wee hours of Tuesday. The attempt came close on the heels of the theft of eight common marmosets from the Alipore zoo. The arrest of Sanjay Sarkar, claim North 24-Parganas police and forest officials, has helped solve the mysterious disappearance of a white spotted deer from the park in June. Police are now looking for four of Sanjay's associates. Around 4.30 am, the assistant security officer of Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre (VECC), Gautam Das, saw a man moving inside the deer park opposite the security office. He raised an alarm and called the security guards. Sanjay wearing only a bermuda scaled the fence and tried to run away. The VECC guards caught him and were joined by the park's guards. Sanjay was tied up and the police were alerted after that. " The VECC security team informed us about the man after which we caught him, " said Dipak Mahato, a security guard at the deer park. Das said the park guards were reluctant to chase the man. " I could see the man moving inside the fenced area. The guards were on the other side but didn't dare go near him. Seeing that they wouldn't take action, I threatened to lodge a complaint with their higher-ups, after which one of them gave chase, " Das said. Sanjay later told the police that there were four more men with him. The guards claimed that the men escaped by jumping over the fence. They crossed the Keshtopur canal and fled towards VIP Road. Two of Sanjay's associates were identified as Laltu and Nantu. The others were unidentified. A resident of Nadia's Shantipur, Sanjay lives in a shanty near the Keshtopur canal. The shanty is owned by Laltu. " These men were involved in the poaching of a white-spotted deer in June. We are looking for the remaining gang members, " said P K Roy, additional principal chief conservator of forests. On June 30, bloodstains were found near the cage where the two white-spotted deer were kept. It was suspected that a deer was killed and its body taken out. Neither the police nor the forest department has been able to trace the missing deer. Four security guards were arrested but they did not provide any leads. The anti-dacoity squad of the city police's detective department was also called in. Sanjay was interrogated by the detective department. " So far, no links have been found with the theft at Alipore zoo, " an officer said. Meanwhile, investigating the marmosets theft case, the detective department is certain that the cage was cut from outside. " A sack was thrown on the floor and then the animals were carried out, " an officer said. Police suspect that Ashok Parui, a zoo employee arrested last week, could hold the key to solving the mystery. -- http://www.stopelephantpolo.com http://www.freewebs.com/azamsiddiqui
Guest guest
Dear friends, Do you not find this news heartening in the face of what is happening in Kolkata for animal rights/welfare/conservation? This news made my day, really. My mother called me just now to ask me about this and I recited the following poem to her as an act of appreciation for taking an interest in animal welfare in Bengal : Beasts of Kolkata, Beasts of Bengal, Beasts of every land and clime, Hearken to my joyful tidings Of the Golden future time. Soon or late the day is coming, Tyrant Man shall be o'er thrown, And the fruitful fields of Bengal Shall be trod by beasts alone. Rings shall vanish from our noses, And the harness from our back, Bit and spur shall rust forever, Cruel whips no more shall crack. Riches more than mind can picture, Wheat and barley, oats and hay, Clover, beans and mangel-wurzels Shall be ours upon that day. Bright will shine the fields of Bengal, Purer shall its waters be, Sweeter yet shall blow its breezes On the day that sets us free. For that day we all must labour, Though we die before it break; Cows and horses, geese and turkeys,(stolen deer meant for venison too), All must toil for freedom's sake. Beasts of Kolkata, Beasts of Bengal, Beasts of every land and clime, Hearken well, and spread my tidings Of the Golden future time. Chorus : Bright will shine the fields of Bengal, Purer shall its waters be, Sweeter yet shall blow its breezes On the day that sets us free. For that day we all must labour, Though we die before it break; Cows and horses, geese and turkeys,(stolen deer meant for venison too) All must toil for freedom's sake. Beasts of Kolkata, Beasts of Bengal, Beasts of every land and clime, Hearken well, and spread my tidings Of the Golden future time. Apologies to George Orwell for plagiarising 'Animal Farm' for the copyright period is over. I thought Ma would appreciate my literary prowess, instead she scoffed by saying " Get back to work at once!
