Guest guest
Hello all, I am pleased to say that the Elephant Polo campaign has got some very good publicity of late. The campaign has been featured in the latest newsletter of the Pollyanna Pickering Foundation that has been sent to 5000 people, all supporters of conservation and animal welfare. This is significant since all these individuals have the potential to influence more people. Also, since the Pollyanna Pickering Foundation is based in UK, people might realise it is not acceptable to patronise or support animal exploitation in India from England, no matter how good the intention. I have been sent a hard copy of this newsletter and would be glad to share copies with active campaigners on this front. To add to this, the campaign has been featured on the popular website of Artists for Conservation. Here : ( http://www.natureartists.com/artists/artist_news.asp?ArtistID=1183_) They are one of the largest wildlife art societies in the world, and record huge numbers of hits each day - and I am pleased to say that they did use the story in their featured news articles on their home page as well ( http://www.natureartists.com/) - you can now find it in the archived news stories. The website is also well worth looking at in its own right since many wildlife artists are featured there. Just a clarification : in the featured material, I have been described as the 'coordinator of the campaign.' Before anyone complains, I would like to say that I have never claimed this in any correspondence with Mrs Pickering. I checked and double checked all my letters to ascertain if I had indeed made such an assertion and found that I had not. I pointed this out to Mrs Pickering and she has acknowledged this mistake and has assured me that in future publications this will be rectified. Part of the confusion arose, I think, because I approached her when I was working with my previous employer, which is also featured on the website. I have also informed Mrs Pickering that if anybody deserves a personal credit for this campaign, it is Azam and not me. My involvement is purely in a personal capacity bereft of any official title. Nonetheless, I apologise in advance if anyone takes exception to the description of my role on the website. It is gratifying to note the campaign alive and kicking after three years since we first started in 2006. I am expecting some further support from more elephant experts in due course on this campaign. I will keep you informed. Thank you Mrs Pollyanna Pickering. Your help is much appreciated. Best wishes and kind regards,
Guest guest
Hi shubho, Without you this campaign would not have reached this far, and the credit that you have achieved is very much valid. Thanks so much for this wonderful development. I have put in the link on the site, here is the link: http://www.stopelephantpolo.com/newslinks.htm Please convey my best wishes to Pollyanna Pickering, it is just awesome to have her join this esteemed list of animal people. The daily traffic statistics of the site: http://www.stopelephantpolo.com is increasing everyday and positive news & developements like these will only help this in every way. Lastly I would once again like to say that the idea behind this website originated from Mr. Edward Berry of 'The Elephant Commentator' who suggested that we have something where all the posts and debates/ research/ notes etc on elephant polo can be archived for all to see. This website is still a free website (not manned by any professional) and I have over the years tried my best to have it presented in the most professional and appropriate way possible. Shoot in more ideas as to how best can this site be improved. Also if any professional can design this (for free), I would be grateful. As far as credits is concerned- This campaign is everybody's baby. We all have stood 'United against Elephant Polo' , and that is clearly mentioned on the website's homepage in a very colourful way. I have also included the web links of the organisations and individuals who have lent their voice and have a website. So anyone visiting the site, who wants more information can go directly to their website by clicking the names. Guest guest
Hello Azam, Thank you for this message. Yes, of course I will convey your wishes to Mrs Pickering. I have already written to her about your work with Dame Daphne Sheldrick in Kenya. I am glad to note that the website is being visited frequently. If more people get to know about this issue, they will start probing it themselves. I reckon a lot of them already have. The website was a massive achievement on your part and I still recall the torrid conversation we had before launching it. And the late night phone calls till the Jaipur match actually took place. And indeed, Edward Berry was the one who suggested the compilation which brings me to Jigme's previous point regarding cross linkage of websites. I think it is a great idea and I will pass on his message to Joyce Poole and others who are working on this issue. Pooling of resources is always beneficial, it is a kind of cross pollination of ideas. I would also like to see a written publication on this topic, preferably a book with a proper ISBN number. If we get a legal verdict by next year, then I am sure this could be done with some conclusive evidence at hand, at least in India. One has to be thankful for the groups and individuals who are fighting for this legally in India, PeTA, Naresh Kadyan, Raj Panjwani and everyone else involved in the litigation. Once the game is prohibited in India, there are other issues to address, most notably the cross border smuggling of elephants. The ownership of the Jaipur elephants is already under investigation. It has been nice to make a small contribution to raise awareness on this. We need to do a lot more though to highlight the plight of elephants in general, in captivity and in the wild. I am quite sure things will progress if we stay on course. Thank you for your efforts to maintain the website, it is the most public face of this endeavour, without its presence, little could have been achieved. Good luck.
