The government has been under pressure from CZA, NGOs and wildlife activists to take concrete steps in view of the theft of eight Brazilian monkeys earlier this month. The proposed state zoo authority will look after the upkeep and maintenance of zoos run by the government. It will be headed by the chief secretary, while the forest secretary will act as its vice-chairman. An IFS officer will also be part of the body, apart from two representatives from NGOs and two other wildlife experts. There are several zoos in the state, including some run privately. According to officials, the state cannot have direct control over private zoos even if some have been recognised by CZA. The primary objective is proper maintenance of the Alipore and Darjeeling zoos as well as the one proposed in South 24-Parganas. Standards and norms for housing, upkeep, healthcare and the overall management of animals in zoos have been laid down by CZA, an autonomous statutory body. The state zoo authority will function along similar lines. The government has adopted several measures to ensure better security at the Alipore zoo, including appointing new officials, having a different security agency to guard it and so on.
