Guest guest
The potential paying audience for cycle polo is likely to be even smaller than the paying audience for elephant polo, who if deflated might all be stuffed into the trunks of the vehicles of the players. However, the potential paying audience for elephants playing polo on bicycles might entice Ringling. -- Merritt Clifton Editor, ANIMAL PEOPLE P.O. Guest guest
In Thailand (Antara) it is not just elephants that attract the potential audience it is also the sexy babes who come in the package. In India it is the celebrities like sportsmen, bollywood stars, industrialists and business tycoons and retired Royals who are lured into make the elephant polo tournaments a HIT. Since we the animal people 'may not' be as 'Sexy' as the Thai babes of Antara or hold the 'Celebrity' status as those in India, it certainly would be difficult to attract the potential audience. So in order to shift the focus of the potential audience from 'elephant polo' the above parameters certainly need to be considered to make this a HIT. Guest guest
Merritt, To the elephant polo people, I would suggest 'deflating' elephant dung and taking them home in their car trunks so that they can keep them as reminders of what they really were during the days they played elephant polo....just a piece of ----. Also Merritt, wouldnt it be nice if everyone turned fit like you are and what better way than cycling. I dont see no harm in promoting cycle polo. If it picks up popularity over the years and in some way draws more audience than elephant polo which in turn might mean fewer elephant polo matches meaning fewer elephants captured from the wild for the sake of polo (now I know thats not the only source....just a lil exaggerated here), which in turn would mean fewer elephants having to go through the ordeal of 'playing' because an a rich man thought he had nothing better to do on a Sunday and a few other rich men thought making a mockery of a giant whom people respect and revere and fear was the best way to spend their week end. Guest guest
I really don¹t see how replacing one animal for another in this game is going to really help. The folks that go to see elephant polo go to see just that, jumbos lumbering up and down the field. Given a choice, they would be doing that or betting on horses/yachts/dogs, but I don¹t see them betting on real athletes on bikes. These are hardcore gamblers and/or hunters, or other idle bourgeois drawn in by swank watch commercials. If anyone has ideas on stopping the Elephant Polo Event in Chitwan this fall, please post. There are enough of us here close enough to this next jungle event to do something. But I am not sure if the event will actually take place, as rumour has it the current Nepali government has closed the venue (Tiger Tops resort) for failure to pay back taxes. Although an event like this might generate enough revenue to pay off the officials and reopen the park. Guest guest
I am afraid I have to agree with what Jigme and Merritt Clifton have opined. I have no issues with the promotion of cycle polo in its own right and merit, but I am not entirely certain that as a spectator sport it could replace elephant polo. I would also tend to agree with the assertion that the audience for elephant polo would not be very eager to bet on performers of cycle polo because the sight of humans riding cycles would not have the same exotic flavour for westerners who patronise elephant polo. I do concur with Merritt Clifton when he says, " However, the potential paying audience for elephants playing polo on bicycles might entice Ringling. " This is a valid statement as circus elephants are made to ride bicycles. And my opposition to elephant polo is based on the same grounds that would make me oppose elephants riding cycles or playing polo on cycles.
