Ganesan turning into a caretaker of 160 stray dogs. “He takes care of these dogs as his pets in Seremban. Now he is desperately looking for help to support his cause in saving these dogs from being homeless and back on the streets,” said Augustine Amaladass, deputy chairman of Indian bureau for Persatuan Karyawan Malaysia, who alerted *Malay Mail *about Ganesan’s kindness and his plea for some assistance. Ganesan stays in Puchong and does odd jobs to make ends meet to take care of his family of four. At the same time he also needs some extra money to maintain the dog shelter in Seremban. “Four years ago, all I did was feed a hungry dog in front of my house in Brickfields and the next day I saw the dog again and fed him,” said Ganesan, a former Kuala Lumpur City Hall staff. The 53-year-old, who opted for early retirement, said the dog he fed saved his life. One day the dog just stopped right in front of his car and would not allow him to drive out. “I then came out and the dog ushered me to the front tyre where I spotted that three of the car tyre’s bolts and nuts were loose. It kind of made me realise that the dog saved me,” said Ganesan. From then on, he kept the dog and named it Chinna. Since then, Ganesan started to save stray dogs because he felt that this is the most he could do for the dogs. Eventually, when the number of dogs he saved started to increase, his neighbours started complaining. “I had no choice but to look for a new place where there would be no disturbance, and through a friend I managed to get a location at Jalan Rasah, Seremban, which is a single storey house with ample land at a rental of RM 1,000 a month,” he added. He has also employed three workers to take care of the dogs, and these three workers are paid RM700 monthly. Ganesan’s overhead for monthly expenses is estimated to be around RM15,000. “It does cost a lot because it is important that these dogs are well taken care of. I also have some friends who are veterinarians and they come once every few months to check on the dogs,” he said. The dogs are fed dog biscuits and rice with chicken meat three times a day. Apart from that Ganesan also takes time to train and play with dogs. “They are definitely tame and pose no harm to anyone,” said Ganesan. Now with the increasing cost of maintaining the shelter, Ganesan hopes that people would help him support his good cause and seeks sponsorship from the general public, and also welcomes them to visit the dogs. He is willing to give them away, for adoption as pets for those who can show these dogs the same love and care given at the shelter.
