THIRD EQUINE ABUSED CASE IN LAST 15 DAYS – WHERE IS HUMANITY?

PRESS NOTE – 14.09.2009

Close to the heels of a tragic death of an injured pony in Kalyan comes

another incident of animal cruelty in Turbhe. Today on 14.09.2009, the

Turbhe Police have arrested a horse owner for mistreating his horse which is

supposed to be used for ‘Victoria’ – Horse Cart at Nariman Point.

The horse was injured with wounds on his legs which was bleeding & on

Stomach. The horse was is such bad state that his entire body hair were lost

& the horse became pink in skin color means that horse got severe Skin

disease named ‘Scabies’. The animal was made to walk a distance of approx

50 kms on tarred road from Turbhe to Nariman Point. The hooves of horses are

not made to run on Tar or Cement road. The animal was tired, dehydrated &

malnourished. The blood, bruises & wounds on the horse gave enough evidence

of the cruelty inflicted on the animal. The ribs of horse were clearly seen.

After receiving call from Turbhe police station, PAWS sent its active

volunteers from Navi Mumbai - *Dhanjay Yadav & Rohan Shete , Parinita Joshi

*to give spot first aid. The PAWS team got into the action and took the

horse in their possession. PAWS – Plant & Animal Welfare Society has sent

its ambulance to give first aid to the Horse & later the horse was then

taken in a tempo to Bombay SPCA for further medical treatment.

The owner is arrested & will be charged under the Prevention of Cruelty to

Animals Act 1960 under Section 11. Under this section beating, overriding,

torturing any animals which not fit is punishable offence.

Nilesh Bhanage, founder of PAWS says that after the Kalyan incident, PAWS

volunteers & Police have been very vigilant on animal cruelty cases. Efforts

are being made to save lives of horses & ponies that are still being used as

animals of labours. PAWS feels bare treatment to such animals not going

solve issue but the offender should be exposed in Media & should be punished

under acts.

“This is 3rd case in last 15 days where the speechless horses & ponies

abused in one of the most modern metro city in world. This clearly proves

how Tonga walla abuses animals” said PAWS Trustee & complainer Ms. Mansi

Bhanage.
