The white horse, which was kept in the custody of the Turbhe police after it was rescued, had several injury marks on its body as a result of it being abused by its driver. The police have booked the tonga driver, G Jaiswal, under Section 11 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. Animal activist Manasi Bhanage of the Thane unit of Plant and Animals Welfare Society (PAWS) told TOI: " We had got a call from one of our volunteers in Navi Mumbai, informing us that this poor horse which could barely walk was being made to drag a tonga that was going all the way to south Mumbai. We immediately intercepted it and helped the animal which was in visible pain.'' A police case was registered. The PAWS team found out that the tonga was being taken to Nariman Point where its owner resides. " The horse was rescued in the nick of time or it could have sustained permanent damage to its legs. It will later be sent to the Bombay Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (BSPCA) in Panvel,'' she said.
