At that time Bebe was in a very small enclosure and had been shackeled and foot pegged to the ground. All he did was rock his head back and forth continuously. Obviously he had grown mentally disturbed by the small space, lack of companionship, no enrichment and being constantly pegged to the ground. It was very sad to see and when I read the story in a local paper that he had died, it did not surprise me. He had looked in terrible condition. Mentally, he seemed destroyed. I think that stress weakened his physical body. Here is an online version of the same story I had read:http://japanupdate.com/en/?id=2628 " - Greg wrote of the Okinawa Zoo in Feb. 2006 I don't know how the Thailand or Japan govt. can be influenced.Perhaps the local NGOs taking a role would be effective...I am not sure. A most unfortunate development. Suparna
