Guest guest
Dear colleagues, I refer to the comment in a previous posting regarding tigers and the former Indian cricketer Sourav Ganguly : " The Tiger, is not only the National Animal of India, it is also the Pride of Bengal. But this State seems too busy to cater to the requirements of the real Tiger in captivity than the Human Tiger of Bengal - Cricketer Saurav Ganguly. Such is the state of affairs. " Kindly have a look at this note from Wildlife First : " Cricketers' campaign : In 1997 Wildlife First roped in leading Indian cricket stars – Rahul Dravid, Anil Kumble, Javagal Srinath, Sourav Ganguly, Venkatesh Prasad, Sunil Joshi and Robin Singh to endorse the cause of tiger conservation. The campaign reached out to millions of people with more than 200 TV spots aired on several leading international television channels including BBC, ESPN and Star Sports free of cost. " ( Link : http://www.wildlifefirst.info/opinion.htm ) Are tigers suffering in captivity in zoos because of Sourav Ganguly's deemed status in Bengal? Please draw your own conclusions. Warm regards and best wishes,
Guest guest
*Royal Bengal tigers* (*Panthera tigris tigris* or *Panthera tigris bengalensis*) in wild and in captivity in the State of Bengal are not suffering because of either the deemed status of Saurav Ganguly, nor is it suffering because of the controversial status of Mr. Ganguly as WISDEN (the Bible of Cricket puts it): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sourav_Ganguly In " The Wisden Cricketer <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wisden_Cricketer> " [2]<http://content-www.cricinfo.com/wisdencricketer/content/story/295629.html>it was described as follows: * " The imperious Indian - dubbed 'Lord Snooty' - deigned to represent Lancashire in 2000. At the crease it was sometimes uncertain whether his partner was a batsman or a batman being dispatched to take his discarded sweater to the pavilion or carry his kit bag. But mutiny was afoot among the lower orders. In one match Ganguly, after reaching his fifty, raised his bat to the home balcony, only to find it deserted. He did not inspire at Glamorgan or Northamptonshire either. At the latter in 2006 he averaged 4.80 from his four first-class appearances. " His Lancashire teammate Andrew Flintoff <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_Flintoff> thought him to be aloof and compared his attitude to that of Prince Charles<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prince_Charles> * ** And I thought Cricket was supposed to be a Gentleman's sport !! The TIGERS are but suffering because of the shift in focus and the transfer of love and respect of the people in general in West Bengal from the REAL TIGERS to the Human Tigers. Show me an example when in the State of Bengal there has been a strike, arson, bandhs (closure) etc by a ruling Government or the opposition or any section of the society over a TIGER crisis? As we debate here on AAPN the Tigers at the ALIPORE ZOO (Prison) in Kolkata city every single day have to go through this ordeal of living in a crammed cage, hounded by over hundred odd visitors perched on the fences and the cage, hooting, shouting, throwing things inside - all this while we debate. DARE doing this to even a passport size photograph of the TIGER MAN in the same city? When the FAKE Tiger (the MAN) is allegedly rudiculed, insulted or needs attention, this is how the society responds (even the State Head feels insulted): http://www.thehindu.com/2005/12/17/stories/2005121708531200.htm Dropping Ganguly an insult to all, says Buddhadeb also see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sourav_Ganguly " .... fans blocked roads and railway tracks in Kolkata<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kolkata>, burning effigies of chief selector... " A Rahul Dravid, Anil Kumble, Javagal Srinath ... etc may not attract such violent and agressive support from their fans because West Bengal has been a state sports crazy people who would go to any extent for the game/ sport they love. If only the same agression and respect could be contributed towards the REAL TIGER, I am sure even Sourav Ganguly would feel good. All that said, I still stand by the people of BENGAL when they say: Royal Bengal Tiger- The pride of Bengal, but I would certainly disapprove of the State and its people's step motherly attitude towards ignoring the actual animal in crisis and getting emotionally charged up over a Human being by tagging him a TIGER. This is NONSENSE. In the past many of such celebrity cricketers who have been tagged with these majestic beasts have not lived up to the expectation. Tiger Pataudi was how Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi the veteran cricketer of India was known. This gentleman almost thought he was a real Tiger and was caught ferriying a Deer carcass in his car, and as of now he is busy shuttling for court hearings over the alleged violation of the Wildlife Protection Act. Guest guest
Pretty funny, is it not, the resentment against Ganguly when Assam has failed to produce a single cricketer at the national level till date? And pretty ironical, is it not, the outburst targetting Alipore Zoo, when Guwahati Zoo has been at the forefront of animal trading and whole species have disappeared from that dismal zoo? Visitor behaviour in Guwahati Zoo is just as obnoxious as it is anywhere else. And pretty interesting, is it not, criticising Bengal for its inability to protect tigers when the very existence of National Parks in Assam have been threatened by militancy and so many tigers have died at Kaziranga itself? Dubbing Ganguly as a tiger is the prerogative of the people of Bengal and not the people of Assam. And Ganguly's mannerisms on and off the field are irrelevant to tiger conservation issues. His mannerisms do not take away his record as India's most successful Test Captain. Someone from Assam has to play a Test before being judgmental on cricket being a gentleman's game or otherwise. Assamese students in Bangalore are some of the biggest troublemakers, ill mannered, violent, unsrcupulous, promiscuous and parochial. As I said in a previous message, people who live in glass houses should not throw stones. There is absolutely no comparison between Bengal and Assam, despite all the political troubles that have plagued Bengal, the state is light years ahead of Assam in every respect. Conservation being one of them. Guest guest
I am not a die hard Ganguly fan, not by any stretch of the imagination, and I certainly do not approve of many things he has done and how Bengal had reacted to his ouster. But what I am just trying to say is that comparing Bengal's attitude to Ganguly with that of the attitude of people to tigers is maybe not appropriate. Everyone knows that Alipore Zoo is bad, at least now they are trying to do something about it. The problem is the zoo being in the city rouses sentiments for its removal or transfer. This is one reason why the zoo has not been shifted, because political motives are involved. it is unfortunate and there is no way to deny this. I would be genuinely interested in knowing if there is a tiger crisis in Bengal in the wild and to what extent the government is acting. As for tigers in captivity, conservationists have questioned their incarceration. So I would never say that tigers in Kolkata Zoo are in the best of conditions since they are not in the best of conditions anywhere. And Guwahati Zoo's tiger enclosure is better than the tiger cages in Alipore Zoo. It is actually good that Guwahati Zoo keeps tigers in only one open air enclosure, whereas in Kolkata, some of them are in awful cages, with no access to grass and trees and outdoors. In Alipore Zoo, there are two open air enclosures for tigers and I would suggest the rest in cages should never be replaced once they die. There is no way to deny that Alipore Zoo's big cat cages are terrible, I cannot defend the indefensible. And I carry my Indian identity as strongly as anyone from any other region. I actually believe in global identities even more than national ones.
