Oh deer, I have been adopted! Pandurang Mhaske / DNA

Dr A Umapathy, 68, and his grand-daughters had adopted a spotted deer, a

peacock, two lovebirds and a parrot at the Arignar Anna zoological park in

Tamil Nadu.

Animal adoption programmes have been implemented in zoos across

India, such as the Mysore and Lucknow zoos as well as abroad, to involve

people in conservation. At the Mysore zoo, you can adopt an animal after

paying Rs500 to Rs1,59,570 per annum, and contribute to the upkeep of the

animal.

Zoos abroad where you can adopt animals include the Saint Louis zoological

park in Missouri, in the United States, and the London and Toronto zoos. The

San Diego zoo adoption fees range from $20 to $5,000, depending on the

animal you choose.

The Bristol zoo in England has over 450 species available for adoption,

including lions, lemurs, penguins and primates. At the Chessington World of

Adventures & Zoo, adoption for £40 gets you a certificate, a photograph of

your animal, a free ticket to visit your animal, a factsheet on your animal,

and your name on a plaque outside the enclosure.
