You can read more about it on this link, it also appeared in the Times. http://photogallery.indiatimes.com/articleshow/5115851.cms Apparently they chose this event to unveil the Rajmata Gayatri Devi trophy for polo. Devraj Singh and Lalitya who attended and perhaps participated in the event are the late Rajmata's grandchildren. The Rajmata (RIP) was a patron of the Elephant Family, an organisation dedicated to welfare of captive elephants and was closely associated with Help in Suffering (HIS) another organisation that worked for the welfare of captive elephants in Jaipur. She would be turning in her grave watching her own kin promoting this idiotic sport, especially since they used captive elephants from Jaipur for this event. I dread to think how they must have been transported from Jaipur to Manesar. I understand that a letter has gone to AWBI on this issue. What will it's stance be? And what is the legal angle on this? Surely the AWBI is looking to minimise the use of elephants in the captive fora. But here we have the Elephant Polo Association talking of promoting this 'sport'. May we have a legal opinion here following which we can figureout what further action can be taken? thanks and regards Arjun -- Nilesh Bhanage +91 9920777536 www.pawsasia.org www.freewebs.com/pawsproducts www.youtube.com/watch?v=9HigxbMqfh0
Guest guest
Dear Nilesh, Azam, Pablo and everyone, This is a regrettable development, all the more unfortunate, because those in positions of influence in Delhi leading the animal welfare movement, stayed silent after the whistle had been blown. I alerted Raj Panjwani the day I received information that this match was going to take place. I do not think it is the onus of individual activists to continue this campaign in the face of indifference from the most well known animal welfare organisations in India, especially in Delhi. And we all know who these individuals are. I did talk to some representatives of some organisations the day before this match took place and I cannot say the response was encouraging or proactive. Thanks for doing your bit. I have talked to some more people to contact the organisers directly about this to explore the legal ownership of these animals. Let us see if something comes out of this. If the elephants were moved from Rajasthan to Delhi, the Chief Wiildlife Wardens of both the states must have known about it in advance. Best wishes and kind regards, On Tue, Oct 13, 2009 at 10:51 PM, Nilesh <nilesh wrote: > > > ---------- Forwarded message ---------- > Arjun.A.R 2009/10/14 > Subject:Elephant Polo > > Friends, > > This miserable excuse for sport went off in our nation's capital over the > weekend, attended by some self claimed celebrities.
