Animal rights activist Gandhi urges PM Nepal to stop sacrifices in Gadhimai Mela

Sunday, 25 October 2009 11:06

Animal rights activist Menaka Gandhi has written a letter to Prime Minister

Madhav Kumar Nepal asking for his intervention to stop animal sacrifices in

Gadhimai festival in Bara, Press Trust of India (PTI) reported.

More than a hundred thousand animals are sacrificed at the festival that

occurs every five years in November. Millions of devotees throng the

Gadhimai temple at the Indo-Nepal border during the festival.

Animal rights activists have termed the sacrifices a 'shame on Nepal' and

urged for immediate actions to stop the barbaric killing of animals.

Menaka Gandhi, the spouse of late Sanjaya Gandhi and sister-in-law of former

Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, is an acclaimed animal rights activist,

environmentalist and politician. *nepalnews.com*
