New devices to keep check on poachers

TNN 19 November 2009, 09:57pm IST

BAHRAICH: To keep a check on poaching of rare animals, tiger and leopard

officials of Dudhwa Tiger Reserve, Katarniaghat WildLife Sanctuary and Sohelwa

Tiger Reserve have procured advanced device to detect traps laid by poachers in

the protected forest area.

Deputy director, PP Singh said: " To nail down poaching activities, we have arms

with deep search metal detectors (DSMD) to detect iron clamps and traps used by

poachers. "

Forest officials have identified 39 sensitive areas comprising ten in

Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary area, 27 in Dudhwa National Park (DNP) and two

in Sohelwa Tiger Reserve area where regular patrolling is needed. " Forest guards

and other field staff would regularly patrol in the sensitive areas with DSMD, "

said Singh.

Traffic India (a wing of worldwide wildlife fund-WWF) representative Rahul Dutta

informed TOI that poachers mostly use iron clamps to trap tigers, leopards and

other wild species. He had came with his team at Dudhwa to impart training of

how to use DSMDs to the DTR field staff.
