BSF seizes smuggled goods worth Rs 21 lakh

Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Nov 24 – Stepped up vigil along the international border with

Bangladesh by the Border Security Force (BSF) personnel has started paying

dividends as smuggled goods worth more than Rs 21 lakh including cattle

heads, forest products and other contraband items were seized during the

last 24 hours. BSF sources said that the items were seized near the

international border in Dhubri, East Khasi Hills and West Khasi Hills

districts as a part of the stepped up vigil to check infiltration and

trans-border crimes. Sources said that cattle smuggling is still a major

menace and the smugglers and anti-national elements also try to smuggle out

forest products in the form of wooden logs to Bangladesh.

Meanwhile, frequent use of SIMs of mobile phone networks ofBangladesh by

anti-national elements is also a matter of concern as very often such SIM

cards are recovered by the troops of the border guarding force from

anti-national elements. BSF sources said that yesterday, the BSF men

arrested three persons- Ritu Rai, Suman Rai and Adhim Rai, originally from

Jalpaiguri, in the Kilapara area along the international border and four SIM

cards of mobile phones along with Rs 6527 were seized from them.

Interestingly, one of the SIM cards recovered was of a mobile phone network

ofBangladesh. The arrested persons have been handed over to police.

In another incident, BSF men arrested one anti-national element identified

as Bana of Umkiang near the Kuliang border outpost of the force in East

Khasi Hills. The BSF seized Rs 16,660 along with one Mahindra van, 11

blankets, two mobile phone sets, three SIM cards and crockery items from the

possession of the arrested person. The value of the seized items is

estimated to the tune of Rs 4.60 lakh, sources said.
