Announcing this at a meeting here on Friday, Visakha Society for Protection and Care of Animals (VSPCA) president Pradeep Kumar Nath spoke about the efforts of the organisation to prevent cruelty to cows. The organisation had rescued over 1,730 cattle from illegal slaughter and transportation. The united forum was formed to protect sacred cows and their breed which was fast depleting and many of the Indian breeds that were on the verge of extinction. He said the ad hoc committee, with K. Srirama Chandra Murthy in charge, comprises nine members. The next meeting would be held at Simhachalam on January 10. Mr. Pradeep Nath alleged slaughtering of cows was continuing openly near Relli Veedhi, Arilova, Bakkitakki and Duvvada. Male cows offered to Simhachalam temple by devotees were being sold to slaughterers by the temple authorities through auctions. The temple was earning a revenue of Rs.20 lakhs every year through the sale of around 6,000 male calves.
