Guest guest
*Akbar dies of old age* * * *Guwahati, Friday, January 29, 2010* Akbar, one of the seven big cats rescued from Moonlight Circus in Assam in 2004 passed away at the Assam State Zoo in Guwahati city today. Mr. Narayan Mahanta, Director of the Zoo told over the phone that Akbar a hybrid lion died of old age. It may be noted that following the Supreme Court Ban on the exhibition of Lions for entertainment, Akbar along with other performers at the Moonlight circus that included 6 more big cats was rescued and given a fresh lease of life in one of the best enclosures the Zoo has. Mr. Mahanta also said that Akbar came in a crammed cage and that was all he had for his home. It was only after he was released in the enclosure that Akbar felt close enough to the wild although in captivity. I must say that although I am against Zoos, this Zoo is one of the best managed Zoos in India and the little span of life that Akbar enjoyed in captivity after his release from the Circus cage is perhaps the best that this country could offer, considering the pitiful conditions that exist in most of the Indian Zoos. May you rest in peace Akbar ! Azam Siddiqui -- http://www.stopelephantpolo.com http://www.freewebs.com/azamsiddiqui
