Guest guest
Guwahati: 8th February' 2010 25 Himalayan Griffon Vultures & a Dog mowed to death Killer Trains of India do it once again.25 (twenty five) Himalayan Griffon Vulture (Gyps himalayensis) & a Dog which were feeding on a cattle carcass on the tracks mowed to death by a steel monster 45 kms from Guwahati city in Assam.Worst- the Railway authorities would not even bother to note/ report this incident till 4 days later on 8th feb (today) locals alerted the Forest department and they reached the site of the massacre.Only 2 birds were been found seriously injured and are being treated at a nearby center. Imagine 4 days unattended, how many could have survived?? Guest guest
Dear Azam, Thank you for posting this news item. I have intimated noted ornithologist Rajat Bhargava about this. You can also get in touch with him directly at rajat_avi I am sending a message to Dr Asad Rahmani of Bombay Natural History Society who is an expert on vultures. This incident has also been brought to the attention of a birdwatcher colleague of mine in Cambridge and I have requested him to pass the message to international bird groups so that some appeal can be sent to the Indian Railways to be more sensitive to wildlife and animal casualties. Major birding groups in India have also been alerted. I assume that major conservation groups in North East India are now aware of this. If this a major recurring problem, maybe the Wildlife Institute of India should be informed as well. If you need any further help, please do not hesitate to talk to me.
