This news item appeared today on MSN. Sometimes, the links disappear after a

while, so if you cannot access it, kindly drop a line since I have saved

some of the pictures. They also do these exercises in a place called

Vairengete in Mizoram in North East India and I have personally visited that

jungle.

This is where I saw it :

http://news.in.msn.com/gallery.aspx?cp-documentid=3620219 & page=1

A U.S. Marine eats a scorpion during a jungle survival exercise with the

Thai Navy, as part of the " Cobra Gold 2010 " (CG10) joint military exercise,

at a military base in Chon Buri Province on February 9.

The jungle survival exercises help the US marines understand the science of

survival, not just as a theory but as a practical reality. These exercises

give them hands-on experience of a situation, or whatever tight spot they

may find themselves in future. They are taught how to gulp a few deadly

scorpions, wriggling lizards and bulky frogs. Yuck, one may say, but the

tough guys are taught these survival skills so that they can operate in

tough and inhospitable terrain.

Dear ,

Many thanks for bringing this matter to the platform of AAPN.

If you can recall that I had posted something on the Vairangte, Mizoram

(INDIA) counter insurgency issue on 8th of August' 2008 on AAPN.

I had also alerted and brought this matter to the honourable 'Animal Welfare

Board of India' (AWBI).

I strongly felt that when every section of the society from an ordinary

civilian to the celebrated film industry, from politicians to the Honorable

President of India can be advised on the dos and don'ts with regards to

animal abuse in India.

Therefore why cannot the defense??

Indian laws 'DO NOT' allow any defense mechanism on Indian soil to carry out

the slaughter/ consumption or use of 'WILD' animals for training or any

other exercise whether for use by the Indian Army or any other foreign

Nation military participating.

I am glad to say that I received a prompt response from the 'Consultant

editor' AWBI in this regard after my communication saying that the board is

working on the matter.

However I am still to hear of any update on this from the board till date,

and the necessary action (if any) taken.

Do find the letter below.

Thanks,

Azam Siddiqui

*Sub: Indian animals being abused for Counter Insurgency Training*

Dear all at AWBI,

Please see read the full text to find the quoted lines. These lines have

been extracted from Wikipedia and it is about the The Counter Insurgency and

Jungle Warfare (CIJW) School of the Indian Army which is based in Vairangte,

Mizoram.

It may be noted that since this institution was set up, it has been training

Indian and foreign defense personnels and consumption of the wild animals is

still practiced as a part of the training.

Some animals that are being poached in the name of training by the Army are

as follows:

1. Snakes and reptiles.

2. Dogs

3. Primates

It is hereby requested to caution or issue a notice in this regard to those

concerned so that the training continues MINUS the slaughter and use/abuse

of wild and protected animals.

Picking up animals from the forest or illegal markets in the northeast of

India and using them for such activities is a punishable offense and the

offenders should be made to take note of this as early as possible

The next high level training is between the US and Indian military

personnels, and the soldiers have arrived.

Please see details below:

*Halt India-US military exercises in Mizoram: CPM to UPA*

Also if any animal whether wild or domestic is used for the purpose of

training, the institution or the authorities concerned should obtain

necessary permission in this regard from the AWBI or the Wildlife

Department.

Also at a time when the nation`s Prime Minister is taking personal interest

in the protection and welfare of animals in danger, this brutality in the

name of training should be immediately halted and those guilty punished/

booked.

An acknowledgment of receipt of this mail is highly appreciated from the

AWBI.
