Nomadic Indian snake charmers are on the lookout for snakes (goman, karat and other poisonous snakes of viper species). Poison of the reptile with long cylindrical body and no legs are in high demand in global markets for making traditional medicines. Some snake charmers from the Indian states of Uttaranchal and Utter Pradesh have arrived in the district to catch snakes as the climate here is slowly getting hot, according to locals. Snakes usually come out of their holes to bask under the sun during this season. Some locals of remote areas, who had arrived in Manendranagar, the district headquarters, said Indian snake charmers have been roaming in and around forest areas and densely populated villages to catch snakes. It is also learnt that they have camped in some areas. In a similar report some 10 months ago, RSS had reported that Indian snake charmers were smuggling snakes from Jhapa to India. -- Lucia de Vries Freelance Journalist Nepal - Netherlands
