All my dear friends

Please can anyone inform whether India has stopped the export of their

monkeys to the US for research and experimentation purpose? If yes when did

the government imposed the ban? Is there any pharmaceutical company in

India established for drug research purpose using primates? If yes are the

primates sourced locally or from other S East Asian countries.

Has Nepal banned the export of their monkeys into the US and other

countries for research?

What year was the ban imposed.

Appreciate your kind infor.

Thanks for all the help

Yitze Malaysia

Nepal banned the breeding and export of rhesus macaque. It happened in

stages:

1. After we filed a Public Interest Litigation the Supreme Court in January

2009 asked the government for clarification after which it said it did not

plan to export monkeys to US. However, the media reported that 25 monkeys

were about to leave the country.

2. In February we gave a presentation at a parliamentary committee after

which it told the department of wildlife to immediately stop export

procedures.

3. In August the Minister confirmed an immediate ban and release of some 350

monkeys at a breeding center.

We now work with the Ministry for the rehabilitation of the monkeys. This

turns out to be a difficult process as bureaucrats are not exactly happy

with the outcome.

I advice our Malaysian colleagues to do the following:

- Launch a website for your campaign incl petition and letter writing to

government officials and blogs

- Build connections within the related ministry - you might need their help

at some point

- Include and inform the media in every step you take

- organise public discussions with the breeders - show the public that you

are willing to relate and explain

- Team up with international campaigners but be clear about what you want

and do not want from them

- Organise one event each month to keep up the pressure

- Educate communities in areas from where the monkeys are taken

Dear Yitze,

Isn't this the e-mail id of Ms Lim Gaik Kee of Friends of Earth, Malaysia?

Following the assurance given to me in 1977 by the then Prime Minister of

India, Mr Morarji Desai, the ban on export of Rhesus monkeys was stopped by

not allowing Rhesus monkeys to be sent out of India under the Import-Export

Policy.

Information on current use or non-use of primates should be available with

the Committee for the Purpose of Control and Supervision of Experiments on

Animals (CPCSEA) under the Animal Welfare Division of the Ministry of

Environment & Forests (Government of India) and from the Animal Welfare

Board of India (AWBI) http://www.awbi.org/

Dr Shirley McGreal of the International Primate Protection League should be

able to tell you from which countries monkeys are imported into USA and for

what purpose. The IPPL e-mail is info and website

http://www.ippl.org/index.php

Any way why do you want this information now?

Yours sincerely,
