JAIPUR: A 45-year-old female elephant, which collapsed four days back while

preparing for a ride at Amber, died on Wednesday. The tusker was being

treated for paralysis. This is the second such incident in four months.

“The elephant completed its rounds as usual on April 23. The next day it was

again brought to work. It was decked up but no sooner it walked a few steps,

it collapsed,†said Abdul Rashid, president of Amber Elephant Owners

Association. He, however, ruled out the possibility of the animal succumbing

to extreme heat. “She was perfectly fine just the previous day and had gone

up the ramp at Amber. Paralysis can strike anytime. Her death is natural,â€

he said.

“It seems its hinder portion suffered paralysis. We had been administering

Unani and Ayurvedic medicines. However, this morning it breathed its last,â€

Rashid said.

Amber lacks burial space

JAIPUR: A 45-year-old female elephant, which collapsed four days back at

Amber, died on Wednesday.

Four months ago, a 25-year-old female elephant lost its temper due to the

heat and ran away to the nearby hill. Later, attempts to rescue it proved

futile and she too had died.

The body of the elephant was then cut into pieces and buried. “Ideally, the

elephant should have been buried as it is. But the place where the elephants

are currently kept is too congested and it is not possible for a crane to go

there,†he said.

With the latest death, the number of elephants at Amber comes down to 112.

Harsh Vardhan, a prominent wildlife activist said: “An elephant has died

this morning in the city and it is surprising that not nobody is concerned.â€
