*Delhi HC accepts apology of Maneka Gandhi for writing the article ‘lethal

toys’**

4/30/2010*

The Delhi High Court accepted the apology of former Union Minister Maneka

Gandhi for writing an article in a newspaper relating to animal protection

even though a related matter was pending in the court.

After accepting the apology of the former minister, a bench comprising

Justices A K Sikri and S Ravindra Bhat dropped the contempt proceedings

against her.

Realizing her mistake, Maneka Gandhi had on November 4, 2009 filed an

affidavit in the court and accepted her fault and has tendered unconditional

apology for writing the article " Lethal Toys, " .

The court observed that since a review petition was pending against her for

over a period of five years, she assumed that it was dismissed. " She admits

that she should have verified the status of the review petition before

writing the said article, " the court said.

The court was hearing a petition filed by the National Rifle Association of

India (NRAI) as well as the manufacturers of Air guns, air pistols and

pellets seeking initiation of court proceedings against her for writing the

contemptuous article during the pendency of a review petition filed by them

in the court.
