dies

at State Zoo

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, April 11 – The intensified tiger conservation campaign received a

setback after the death of Joy, a four-year-old male tiger at the Assam

State Zoo in Guwahati this morning.

Authorities at the State Zoo informed that the tiger was not keeping well

since Thursday last and even vomited a couple of times on Saturday.

“Experts from the College of Veterinary Science were rushed in and the

postmortem of the animal has also been done. A detailed investigation is

also being carried out by the experts to ascertain the exact cause of

the tiger’s death though it apparently appears to be caused by respiratory

failure,” Narayan Mahanta, divisional forest officer, State

Zoo-cum-Botanical-Garden said.

“The tiger was brought to the State Zoo in April 2007 about a year after it

was rescued from Joypur in Dibrugarh district in 2006. In between, it was

kept in a rehabilitation centre,” Mahanta informed.
