This theme underscores another project of the Swiss house--to protect the magnificent tiger, whose population in the wild is estimated by some researchers at well under 4,000 individuals. To help ensure the survival of this regal predator in its native habitat, Chopard has announced a new partnership with the World Wildlife Fund. Chopard chiefly supports the WWF's Tiger Initiative program, which has established as its ultimate goal the doubling of the wild tiger population by 2022, the next " Year of the Tiger " (according to the Chinese lunar calendar) after 2010. The World Wildlife Federation will conduct its work across the entire range in which these big cats are found--some 13 countries in all--and focus on such pressing threats as poaching, habitat encroachment, and the illicit trade in exotic animals. The organization will also work to open up communication avenues with those most directly involved in activities negatively affecting tiger populations, and forge alliances with governments to improve the situation. Chopard will also join the Responsible Jewellery Council, an organization dedicated to creating best-practice business solutions within the industry, from the effects of raw material collection on the environment, to ethical and humanitarian concerns. These efforts are well in line with family-owned Chopard's focus on philanthropy. Under the guidance of the Scheufele family, Chopard has consistently demonstrated a strong commitment to worthwhile causes, including the battles against devastating diseases such as leukemia and HIV/AIDS. Louis-Ulysse Chopard started his timepiece business in Sonvillier, Switzerland in 1860, specializing in manufacturing chronometers and fine pocket watches. A hundred years later, Karl Scheufele took the helm of the Chopard family legacy. Over the years since, Scheufele and his equally committed wife and children have continued the distinguished brand’s development of luxury timepieces. Amongst its most iconic models are the Chopard Mille Miglia timepieces, with their racing-inspired sporty designs, and the ever popular ladies’ Happy series watches which glisten and sparkle from every angle with a dazzling play of diamonds and other precious gemstones. It is no mistake that the Chopard L.U.C watch collection has ascended to a truly coveted status for collectors of haute horlogerie, with their technically impeccable and finely crafted manufacture movements. The Chopard dynasty of superlative luxury lives on through every exquisitely made Chopard timepiece.
