Guest guest
Hello, This is Gina, how are you. Hope you all had a nice weekend. Here I forward a message from a dear friend in Seoul that I wanted to share with you- I sincerely hope you will find this information useful. Kind regards, Gina. Quote/ The article is about the new research of a bio-engineering scientist at the University of Tel Aviv in Israel, Professor Amit Gefen. Professor Gefen has discovered a way to create skin, muscle, bone, and fat that is " alive " . Of course, the skin, muscle, bone, and fat is not really alive but what he was created has all the same physical substance and properties of real animal tissue. This " living " tissue can be used in tests for new medicines and medical procedures instead of using animals. Actually, all this " living " material is more effective in testing than real living material because the scientists don't have to worry about blood, pain, and other factors that can make a test go wrong. It is believed that by using this new method, about 95% of all animal testing can stop. This is great news for the ethics of science and for animal rights advocates. Here is the article: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2010/04/100413121330.htm It's interesting to note, too, that the EU has agreed upon a new set of rules and procedures regarding animal testing. You may know that this has been a ten year back and forth debate in the EU. Anyhow, both sides - the researchers and the animal advocates - have finally agreed upon a directive. Animals will still be tested (it is still illegal to test great apes), but to a different extent, and in such a way that will limit the number of animals being tested. Hopefully Professor Amit Gefen's discoveries (which are incredible) will enter the research field very soon. http://www.nature.com/news/2010/100413/full/464964a.html Unquote/ -- G.
