Our biggest Vietnam rescue yet

Less than four weeks into the New Year, Animals Asia rescued 19 moon bears

from cramped 40ft cargo containers at an illegal bile farm near Ho Chi Minh

City. To date, this is our biggest rescue in Vietnam. See our Rescue Diary

for more.

Tragically, the rescue came too late for Raspberry, whose internal organs

were literally rotting away, and little “Tiger”, the male cub who was born

just days after her mother arrived. See our Rescue Diary and Jill’s Blog for

Tiger’s full story.

Chinese pharmacies embrace ‘Healing without Harm’

Thirty-three Chinese pharmacies have joined our latest Healing without Harm

campaign, proudly displaying in their shops stickers declaring: “We don’t

sell bear parts”. See here for more.

Join our Vietnam trek and help save the bears

Challenge yourself by joining our Vietnam Moon Bear Rescue Challenge this

October – and help us save more bears from farms. This trip of a lifetime

will take you through Vietnam’s remote hill-tribe region and to our bear

sanctuary near Hanoi. Please see here for more.

Winter campaign to end dog and cat eating

Our China team led a winter media campaign to encourage consumers to say

“no” to dog and cat meat. Thirty-three Chinese groups joined us in calling

on their local media not to advertise dog and cat meat or promote it in

other ways. We provided 28 groups or individuals with 32,000 leaflets, 3,500

posters and 700 DVDs to distribute over the colder months when dog and cat

meat is more popular in China. Read more on the winter campaign.

Shipping tycoon backs Moon Bear Rescue

We were thrilled when long-standing supporter Harriet Tung brought her

husband, Tung Chee Chen (CC), Chairman of shipping giant Orient Overseas

(International) Limited, on his first visit to our Moon Bear Rescue Centre

in Chengdu this March. After a tour of the sanctuary, CC spoke to local

reporters, calling for an end to bear farming. See here for more.

Ricky Gervais calls in for Animals Asia

UK comedian Ricky Gervais (“The Office”, “Extras”) brought the plight of the

moon bears to the British public’s attention by calling in to a popular

radio show and winning £20,000 for Animals Asia and two other animal

charities. See here for Jill’s Blog and listen to Ricky’s call.

Hong Kong’s Walk for Harmony

More than 100 people and their dogs walked proudly together through the

streets of Hong Kong on our annual Walk for Harmony this February. We also

took the opportunity to distribute some of our new anti-fur cards to

walkers, who offered to pass them on to people who may not be aware they are

wearing fur.

Teaching us, as ever….

NIC, an adorable elderly bear at our China sanctuary, recently had his

second eye removed. But far from being depressed, this lovely old boy is

making the most of the spring weather, playing with Jurgen in their

special-care garden. Read Jill’s Blog and see more of Wendy’s photos.

Animals Asia offered tiger bone wine

Our staff were illegally offered tiger bone wine made from the bones of

tigers that had died at Bi Feng Xia Safari Park in Ya’an, Shaanxi Province

during a visit to the park in January. Please see here for more on our

investigations into the trade in tiger parts.

Promoting change in Chinese zoos

We’re stepping up our investigations of zoos and safari parks in southern

China – exposing and reporting abuse and neglect – and working directly with

zoo managers to help them introduce cheap and effective animal-management

practices to improve the lives of hundreds of captive animals. Read about

the team’s recent investigations.
