The big cats, each in its own individual cage, have taken up positions in front of a sports centre next door to their home in Zhengzhou City Zoo, in central Henan province, to press for the return of land borrowed 26 years ago. On a fence dividing the zoo from the sports centre hangs a banner reading: “Return our 50 *mu* of land, return the greenery to the people.” The long-running dispute between the zoo and the sports centre came to a head after it emerged that there were no plans to return the land. Instead, the borrowed land was to be developed into a street of bars and restaurants.
