Thrissur: An elephant named Erattupetta Ayyappan collapsed while the ensemble ‘Ilanjithara Melam' was being staged at Sree Vadakkunathan Temple as part of Thrissur Pooram on Saturday, triggering panic. Veterinarians said muscle cramps caused the elephant's collapse. The elephant clambered back to its feet after it was given first-aid. In the commotion, elephants named Kuttankulangara Arjunan, Thrikkadavur Sivaraju, Paramekkavu Narayanan and Kesavan moved briskly, causing panic among spectators. Later, Erattupetta Ayyappan, Paramekkavu Narayanan and Kesavan were replaced for Pooram ceremonies by Konark Ganapathy, Rajendran and Brahmadathan. Allegation The Kerala Elephant Lovers' Association alleged that Ayyappan was featured at Pooram despite health problems. “The elephant has been restless right from the morning. Organisers did not follow the rule of maintaining a distance of 4 metres between each elephant,” the association alleged. Kerala <http://www.hindu.com/2010/04/25/25hdline.htm> 2010, The Hindu.
