The elephant, Manikantan, which was tethered in the courtyard of the Chempakassery Illom on the banks of the Achencoil since March 31, was found walking along Mullanikkad Road at Omalloor at 9.30 a.m. on Monday. It reached the Omalloor temple at 11 a.m. The elephant chased away the mahouts who tried to bring it under control. Rajeevan, mahout, had a miraculous escape after the elephant tried to trample him. The Elephant Squad from Pathanamthitta reached the temple at 12 noon and fired a tranquiliser shot at the pachyderm. The elephant was later tethered by the mahouts on the temple premises. Elephant lovers' plea The Thrissur-based Animal Lovers' Association has called for steps to transfer captive elephants that showed a tendency to attack their mahouts to various elephant camps of the Forest Department. The association has sent a letter in this regard to the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, Chief Wildlife Warden and Forest Minister Benoy Viswom
