The Agricultural Technology Center, which is located in Kijang-kun, Pusan, publicized on March 2 that it will complete establishment of the Companion Animal Breeding Center and plan to open it this month. The terminology companion animal was suggested in the international symposium - which were held with the theme of 'The Relationship between Human Being and Animals' in Vienna, Austria in 1983 - as a terminology meaning that all the pets including dogs are animals living along with human being. Currently there are approximately 4 million households which breed the companion animals and 5.3 millions of companion animals are being bred. In the meantime, the market size is estimated to reach $1 trillion. There are approximately 70 farms which breed the animals. The Companion Animal Breeding Center is to be established in order to breed and propagate companion animals so that they can become an income source of advanced method for farmers. It is based on the expectation that the industry of companion animals has a value as a new growth industry for the next generation from the perspective of the trend in which pets are considered as companions of life - companion animals - due to the increase in the aged population and the household of one person. Establishment of the Companion Animal Breeding Center is based on the national policy which supports breeding of companion animals as a new growth industry for the next generation and the Agricultural Technology Center of Kijang-kun shall be focusing on breeding of the small high-end pet dogs such as Yorkshire Terrier, Maltese and Pomeranian. One person of the Agricultural Technology Center said " Once the center is opened, research and development to nurture the industry related with companion animals as a new industry of animal resources shall be fostered " .
