Market size of the companion animal reaches KRW 1 trillion¡¦ government

supports industry facilitation

 

Rural Development Administration hosts the heating to support for the

development of the companion animal industry

 

The government has come to support for the facilitation of the companion

animal industry.

 

Rural Development Administration (hereinafter " Rural Development

Administration " ) has indicated that it held the hearing on setting forth the

direction of research for supporting the development of the companion animal

industry for new animal resource with the relevant officials from companion

animal related industry, academics, policy department and others at the

National Institute of Animal Science on the 24th of the month.

 

On this hearing, it was undertaken for 4 cases of thesis presentation by

Professor Kim Byung-soo of Gongju National University for ¡®Trend of Domestic

and Overseas Studies of the companion animal¡¯ and General Manager Park

Yong-hee of Korea Pet Industry Association for ¡®Prospect of Domestic and

Overseas Advancement of the companion animal industry¡¯ and others as well as

the general discussions.

 

In particular, the discussion session had the in-depth discussion on the

role of the industrial sector and the on-site appropriate to the national

demand on future companion animal by the specialists in diverse fields to

engage in the companion animal industry.

 

The companion animal industry would be grown steadily with the increase of

national income and change of family structure, and it is assessed as a

promising industry that is yet to be developed into the export industry

thereof.

 

In fact, due to the expansion of family structure that has extended

population of singles and aged generation with increasing middle class, the

growth of the companion animal industry has emerged for 7~10% range in the

recent 3 years.

 

In addition, the market size of Korea for companion animal is approximately

KRW 1 trillion, still far less than 50 trillion won in the US and 12

trillion in Japan, and the number of breeding household takes up

approximately 50% of entire households in the US and Japan, but Korea has

approximately 20% range.

 

President Ra Seung-yong of the National Institute of Animal Science of

Rural Development Administration says that, ¡°it is planned to expand the

research territory required to grow the companion animal into the new animal

resource industry¡±, and added that, ¡°the research territory is diversified

into the feed development of companion dog, transplant of fertilized egg,

reproduction and others from this year to satisfy the demand of producer and
