Hi Christopher

If polenta does the trick for you in replacing cheese then go for it.

Nutritional yeast will taste more cheese-like but it is flaked and

doesn't have the same texture, which I believe is what you liked in the

polenta. As you refer to Asda I take it that you are in the UK.

Nutritional yeast is available in Health or Whole Food Stores under the

name Engevita produced by Marigold Health Foods Ltd (NAYY). I sometimes

sprinkle it onto soups and stews for a somewhat cheesy taste. I

sometimes eat Taifun brand smoked tofu with almonds and sesame seeds or

with sunflower seeds as a replacement for cheese in salads or with

couscous where I might previously have used feta. It doesn't taste the

same but this tofu is smoked and pressed and has a nice texture. Having

said that I haven't really found anything to really replace cheese so I

just try not to think about it, LOL. Have you tried any of the cheese

substitutes? At one time I saw some in the larger Asda stores but they

should certainly be available in your local health food store. I have

not tried any as I couldn't bear to be disappointed, LOL!!!

Look in the group files for recipes using polenta. I know there are

loads because I asked about this a few years ago. You should be also be

able to find uncooked polenta meal (corn meal) in packets in the

supermarket, so you can make your own as Deanna suggests, if you add

nutritional yeast to it or even a very small amount of marmite, you may

find it even more cheese-like.

Do let us know how you get on.

I've seen Polenta in the grocery store. Now that I know of some tried and true

recipes, I'll give it a try next time I'm shopping. But, what section of the

grocery store do you go to buy Nutritional Yeast? I don't think I've ever heard

of it or seen it before. Baking aisle, maybe?

I'm in Scotland, Debra, and I can only find nutritional yeast in a

health or whole food store. It may be different where you are. I would

have thought it would be in a whole food section rather than the baking

aisle.
